A generic sketch, a distinctive car, and the details that still deserve a second look in the Melissa Witt case
I came across this article again — “Police ask for help finding Witt witness” — and I want to zero in on the specific details it included about the man and the vehicle, because those are the pieces that still have the potential to matter.
According to the article, the man investigators were trying to identify was described as being between 20 and 30 years old, approximately 5 feet 11 inches tall, and weighing around 180 pounds. He had curly strawberry blond hair and possibly a beard. He was reportedly seen near the location where Melissa Witt’s body was later found, and what stood out to the witness was that he appeared out of place — notably, he did not have any hunting equipment with him. At one point, he was also seen changing clothes in that area.
The vehicle associated with him was described in much more specific detail. It was a dark gray or black newer model car. It had what appeared to be a racing stripe or decal on the passenger side rear quarter panel, possibly in purple and blue. The car also had a spoiler on the trunk. Inside, there was a clothes rack hanging in the back seat, and there appeared to be a college parking permit sticker as well.
Investigators made it clear at the time that this man was not being labeled as a suspect, but as a potential witness they wanted to identify and speak with. They were asking the public for help — hoping someone would recognize either the man, the vehicle, or both.
And while the sketch released with the article is incredibly generic and lacks strong identifying features, the details about the vehicle are anything but.
So I’m putting this back out there again — very intentionally.
Take a moment and really think about this. A young man, mid-20s, strawberry blond hair, possibly a beard… changing clothes near that location. A dark gray or black car with a colored stripe on the rear quarter panel, a spoiler, a clothes rack inside, and a college parking sticker.
Does that sound like someone you knew? Someone you saw? Something you remember but maybe never thought was important?
Time has passed, but memory has a strange way of holding onto things — and sometimes it only takes one detail to bring it all back.
Please read this, share it, and circulate it again. You never know who might see it today and realize they’ve known the answer all along.
