Their Names were Cora, Dawson, and Callan Clancy

 Their names were Cora, Dawson, and Callan Clancy. They were five years old, three years old, and only eight months old when their lives were taken. Yet much of the public conversation surrounding this case has centered on their mother—her mental health, her criminal responsibility, and what punishment she should face—while the three children who died have too often been pushed to the margins of their own story.

My latest essay asks us to bring the focus back to the victims. We can discuss postpartum mental illness, debate the evidence, and examine the justice system without allowing Cora, Dawson, and Callan to become secondary characters. They were not merely part of a controversial case. They were three children with names, lives, and futures they deserved to have.

 I came across this article again — “Police ask for help finding Witt witness” — and I want to zero in on the specific details it included about the man and the vehicle, because those are the pieces that still have the potential to matter. According to the article, the man investigators were trying to identify was described as being between 20 and 30 years old, approximately 5 feet 11 inches tall, and weighing around 180 pounds. He had curly strawberry blond hair and possibly a beard. He was reportedly seen near the location where Melissa Witt’s body was later found, and what stood out to the witness was that he appeared out of place — notably, he did not have any hunting equipment with him.
